jazz futures

New Generation Jazz are proud to present our artist development and youth mentorship programme.

You can join in the weekly sessions with the New Generation Jazz Big Band where players of intermediate and above ability can learn about all aspects of playing jazz in a supportive and fun environment as members of the band under the tutelage of Matt Ellis.Or you can choose to join one of the small combo groups under the leadership of Claire Ellis. Both our courses are enhanced with mentorship from top visiting UK Jazz artists, specially commissioned compositions, real world performance opportunities at major local festivals, and a unique opportunity to meet and make music with like minded young musicians.

All courses are offered free of charge to aspiring young players between 11 and 18 years old.

Engaging the next generation of young players is at the heart of our mission at New Generation Jazz.2021 has presented a unique series of challenges for the entire jazz community. Both artists and audiences have suffered as a result of the restrictions of lockdown and we are working to try and rebuild the bridges between them, creating playing opportunities for rising stars to connect with fans across our South East and beyond.Creating a pathway into jazz for young aspiring players is vitally important to foster the sustainability and growth of the local scene. New Generation Jazz have partnered with a team of inspiring musical mentors and educators from across the entire region to launch the New Generation Jazz Futures programme - a fun, inclusive, comprehensive introduction to jazz, offered free of charge.

Led by the sibling team of experienced musicians and educators Matt and Claire Ellis, the Jazz Futures programme offer weekly sessions for players between the ages of 11 and 18 to explore all aspects of playing jazz. Each week Matt will lead a two-hour session at Brighton’s famous Verdict Jazz Club offering expert hands-on tuition in an aspect of playing jazz and making music as part of the Big Band, and Claire will lead small combo sessions. The sessions will also feature regular special guest mentors drawn from the best local and London-based professionals.

Full backline, drum kit and baby grand piano are provided in a COVID-safe environment. All tutors are DBS checked. This is a unique opportunity to learn about jazz from the professionals in a friendly, fun and supportive environment. The programme is free to any 11-18 year olds, but  places are limited!
